Frequently Asked Questions:

What will I do all summer?
You will usually have 10 or fewer campers in your cabin. You are responsible for those campers their entire time at camp. You will attend all services and activities, and you will have responsibilities with your campers during recreation time. During teen weeks, you may help officiate sports games.

Will I counsel every week?
Camp Joy hires enough counselors each summer to cover our largest weeks. There may be several weeks, however, when our attendances is lower and we will not need a full counseling staff. During those weeks, there may be opportunities for some counselors to have a week off or for others to minister in other areas of camp such as the kitchen, snack shop, grounds, or program.

Will I have any time off during the week?
Counselors are off from the end of Saturday clean-up (usually 1:00 PM) until the beginning of the next camp (Sunday afternoon for teen camps, Monday for other camps).

What if I need a whole week off during the summer?
We try to arrange a week off for each counselor if necessary. It may be difficult, but it can usually be arranged. Of course, not everyone can have the same week off, so if you have a particular week in mind, let Camp Joy know as soon as possible.

How much training do I need?
Camp Joy will provide a week-long training program at the beginning of summer. This will cover philosophy of the Camp, counseling, discipline and characteristics of each age group. The sessions are designed to teach you how to deal with the needs you will encounter during the summer and how to address the spiritual problems that your campers will have. We also provide each counselor with a copy of How to Be a Successful Camp Counselor by David Burrows and Help, I'm a Camp Counselor by Norman Wright, and we ask that these books be read prior to coming to camp.

Will I get paid for the summer?
Each staff member will be provided with tools to raise their own support.

When does camp start and finish?
Training week begins on May 23, 2012, and the last week of camp ends on August 4, 2012.

How will working at camp benefit me?
If you are looking for practical Christian training, hands-on experience and exposure to great preaching, a summer at Camp Joy will be invaluable to you. Our former counselors often testify that their summer at camp was the most valuable summer they've had for ministry experience and personal spiritual growth.
