Changing Gears
It's hard to believe it's October (almost November!) already - what a busy time of year this is at camp! Summer was packed, schools camps flew by, and October has been filled by retreats and recruiting.
The first week of the month was split between a two-day school retreat and a men's retreat. Then we split forces and sent some to recruit summer staff at Ambassador Baptist College and Bob Jones University, while the rest ran a small church staff retreat for a week. That weekend, we had a private couples' retreat. The next week was divided between our annual Young-at-Heart retreat and the fall men's retreat. Currently, we're preparing for our Homeschool & Parenting Conference this weekend.
The retreats have been going well! The Young-at-Heart retreat was a great time of activity, fellowship, rest and preaching for all who came. On Wednesday, they took a special trip to ride the historic East Troy Electric Railroad! The services with D. O. Van Dyne were a special time of fellowship around the Word of God. The Men's Retreat was well attended - nearly 120 men in attendance. Dr. Layton Talbert (BJU Seminary faculty) was the speaker for the weekend and as he preached from the book of Job, the men really grew in their understanding of Job's struggle and, more importantly, Job's God!
Please pray for this weekend's retreat - that we would minister to the families who will come, serving parents and children. Dr. S. M. Davis will be speaking this weekend, and there will be special workshops offered by our staff and by pastors and laymen from nearby supporting churches.
Also, please pray for recruiting. So far, we've been to Maranatha Baptist Bible College, Ambassador Baptist College, Bob Jones University, and Baptist College of Ministry. Northland Baptist Bible College and West Coast Baptist College are on the schedule soon. Pray for contacts that we have already made - we passed out quite a number of applications - and for those that we are about to make. It is our desire and goal to have our summer staff hired by January - we'll need the spring months to focus on program and activities for the summer camps and working on recruiting that can easily distract us from the planning work that needs to be done well.

School Camp
And we thought that summer was busy! During school camps, we run numbers as big as a small teen summer camp - with one-fifth the staff we used to have! Camp is certainly moving along with no signs of slowing. We've already run school camps for Marquette Manor Baptist Academy, North Love Christian School, Lake County Baptist School, and Brentwood Baptist Christian Academy, and now Woodcrest Baptist Academy is here for the week. During this month we've been able to minister to over 450 people through our school camp ministry. Already we've had close to thirty salvation decisions and dozens of others!
As school camps are winding down, we're gearing up for our fall-through-spring camp schedule. October's schedule still has weekday retreat: the Young-At-Heart Seniors Retreat, but we're swinging into our weekend retreat mode. This will give us the opportunity to press forward with some of our building projects. We recently had an excavator digging behind our gym and up the hillside - preparing for the gymnatorium expansion and several new family cabins. The sponsor dining room (the last part of our kitchen expansion project) is wrapping up nicely and is ready for use now.

School Camps Soon...
Next week opens up our month of school camps - five Christian schools will be coming for week-long camps and one school for an overnight retreat. This will be a very busy time for our staff, since we're running good-sized camps without any of the summer help we had earlier. We will also have two weekend retreats in September. It will be a very tiring month for us here! We greatly desire and appreciate your prayer support! And if you happen to be nearby and have time to volunteer, give us a call!
We have had a busy week - lots of general camp maintenance and clean-up, cement-pouring for a drainage gutter to take water from the parking lot around the back side of the lodge, preparation for school camp, and a host of other things! We are very thankful for the Lord's provision of a 24ft box truck to replace the smaller one we lost in May - the newer truck is able to hold considerably more and its height makes dock-loading much easier!
Right now, we have a small retreat till lunch tomorrow - staff couples from a nearby church. Tomorrow, the student body of Baptist College of Ministry will be here from lunch till supper for a school outing. This will be a good opportunity to try to recruit some staff for next summer! Please pray for us as we have already started preparing for and hiring next summer's staff.

Spanish Camp
We just finished a great week of Spanish Camp! We had 147 people here, and though I can't tell you much about the decisions being made or the preaching (since I understand very little of what they said), it was a good week - schedules ran well, games were enjoyable, and meals were great (as usual - we went through hot sauce like crazy, though!). The families are all very appreciative and genuinely thankful for what they enjoy at Camp - even though they don't always know the words to say, they are very wonderful to work with. They whole-heartedly enjoy just about everything, they sing with enthusiasm, they appreciate their preachers, they smile and wave - it has been a blessing to serve them this week! Two of our staff ladies were in nursery this past week - they had the joy of watching 11 kids between the ages of 0-4 who don't speak the same language - 2 or 3 of the kids cry themselves to sleep every service! I spent time in there with the kids (most of whom, by the way, are delightful and adorable!) and while we love them very much, it certainly was a sigh of relief to see the parents return! The morning service & chapel times are one-after-another and last for 3 hours; the evening services are a little more than two hours.
